Mackenzie wins Crescent Moon, Jones on comeback trail in 2nd
By: Riptide Multisports
Dan Mackenzie and Jordan Jones took 1-2 at the Crescent Moon Sprint Triathlon on September 19th in Aurora, CO.
Mackenzie led out of the water with Jones in 3rd, at just under 30 seconds back. Onto the bike, Mackenzie held strong and cooly held off a charging Jones who moved into 2nd place. Coming into T2 off the bike it was close with Jones only 8 seconds back.
The first mile of the 5k run was a steady uphill. Jones gave it all he had trying to bridge the gap to Mackenzie but it was in vain as the leader had a strong run in his legs still. With the fastest run of the day there was no catching Mackenzie and he cruised to victory having led from gun to tape. Jones held strong with the 3rd fastest run of the day continue across the finish in 2nd. Cyrus Severance suffered a flat tire midway through the bike while around 4th place, preventing team Riptide from a possible 1-2-3 finish.
This race ends Dan Mackenzie’s season. Jordan Jones is just starting his, this being his first race back since sustaining a tibial plateau fracture in early June. He’ll race the Westchester Triathlon in Rye, NY next weekend in what should be a very competitive field along with teammate Jocelyn Petrella. Jones has only recently started running again and the Crescent Moon was his first time running at under 7:30 pace so watch for his run to improve as regains his comfort at speed. His 5:44 pace run on the tough and hilly Crescent Moon course shows that his normal capacity is not far off and he looks to compete well this fall.
